The math, in plain terms.

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface, so start by dividing total surface area by 100 to get base squares. Use the actual sloped surface area from your takeoff, not the ground footprint — a steeper pitch covers more area than the house's outline suggests. Most architectural (dimensional) shingles run about three bundles per square, which is why 'bundles per square' is an adjustable input rather than a fixed number. Example: a 2,400 sq ft roof is 24 base squares, and at 3 bundles per square that is 72 bundles before any waste.

Then apply a waste factor. Cut-up roofs, valleys, hips, and starter/cap cuts all consume shingles that never end up as clean field coverage, so you order extra on purpose. This tool multiplies base squares by your waste percentage before converting to bundles and rounds up to whole bundles, because you cannot order a partial bundle. Example: at a 12% waste factor, 24 squares becomes 26.88 squares, times 3 bundles is 80.64, rounded up to 81 bundles. At $38 per bundle that is $3,078 in field-shingle material, and the waste allowance alone — the shingles you bought specifically to cover cuts and complexity — is $328.

For an owner-operator the point is not just the count, it is the dollars. Set the waste factor to match the roof in front of you: a simple gable can run lean, while a complex hip-and-valley roof needs more. Ordering too heavy on every job silently drains margin; ordering too light triggers a second delivery, a stalled crew, and a trip charge. Model both material cost and the waste allowance before the order goes in so the number is a decision, not a guess.

How many bundles are in a square of shingles?

Most architectural/dimensional shingles are packaged three bundles to a square (100 sq ft). Some heavier designer or premium lines run four bundles per square. That is why 'bundles per square' is an input here — set it to whatever your specific product's wrapper states so the count matches your actual order.

What waste factor should I use?

It depends entirely on the roof. Simple gable roofs need less; complex roofs with many hips, valleys, dormers, and cut-ups need more. The 12% default is a starting point you should adjust per job, not a benchmark — walk the roof, look at your cuts, and dial it to reality before you order.

Does this include starter strip, ridge cap, and underlayment?

No. This calculates field shingles only. Starter, hip-and-ridge cap, underlayment, drip edge, ice-and-water, nails, and vents are separate line items you should add to your order from their own coverage rates. Treat this number as the field-shingle core of the material order, not the full bill of materials.
