Square
100 square feet of roof area — the standard unit for pricing material, labor, and profit on a roofing job.
Supplement
Additional scope submitted to an insurer for work an initial estimate missed — code items, extra layers, or damage found on inspection. Documents conditions; never predicts approval.
ACV vs RCV
Actual Cash Value (depreciated) vs Replacement Cost Value (full) — the two ways an insurer values a claim; the recoverable-depreciation gap matters to job profit.
Xactimate
The estimating software most carriers use for property claims; supplement narratives are written to map to its line items.
Storm canvass
Door-to-door outreach in a storm-affected area to book inspections — copy must carry license disclaimers and never imply carrier or FEMA endorsement.
Public adjuster
A licensed advocate who negotiates claims for the policyholder. Contractors must not act as one; supplement work stays contractor-side, owner-reviewed.
Production schedule
The plan sequencing crews, materials, and jobs. Cross-referencing purchase orders and weather prevents crews rolling to unready jobs.
Profit per square
Gross profit divided by squares — the fast field metric for whether a job is worth the crew-day and how much a supplement adds.
Retail vs insurance work
Retail jobs are paid directly by the owner; insurance jobs run through a claim. The operations and margins differ substantially.
Drip edge / ice barrier
Common code-required components a thorough inspection checks for — frequent, legitimate supplement line items when missing.
Adjuster meeting
The on-site meeting where a contractor and insurance adjuster review damage; documented observations support (not predict) the claim outcome.
AOB (assignment of benefits)
A document transferring insurance claim rights to a contractor. Heavily state-regulated; language must be verified with the state DOI.
DOI (Department of Insurance)
The state regulator for insurance practices. Supplement output carries a 'verify with your state DOI and license board' line.
Callback / workmanship warranty
Post-install obligations to correct defects; callback rate is a core crew-quality and margin metric.
